How to Write Fiction – Try These 3 Writing Exercises to Become a Better Fiction Writer

Want to write your own book but having trouble getting started? You may know how to write fiction very well already, or you may be a total beginner, but either way it never hurts to flex the writing muscles by doing some creative writing exercises now and again. Everyone, novice or pro, can benefit. So let’s get started by trying these exercises to get the imagination flowing.

1. Pick up a magazine, dictionary, or newspaper, anything with a lot of words in it. Close your eyes and randomly point to a word. Write the word down. Do this twice more until you have a total of three words. If you pick something like “the” or “a” try again until you get a unique word. Now, write a short story using these three words. Each of the words must appear at least once in the story but can appear as many other times as you like. This is really a fun exercise and leads to some interesting stories. I think you will like this one.

2. If you are reading a novel right now, go and get it. If you are not reading anything, choose a novel from your bookshelf. Now, close your eyes, open the book up, and randomly point to a sentence. Use this sentence to write a short story. It should not be the same story as the novel, but something else you think up in your imagination. This is another really fun exercise and is a really great way to learn how to write fiction without spending a lot of time on outlines and details. You are not to spend a long time thinking about it but just write something fast as it comes to you. No worries about spelling and nitpicky details, you can check those later when you finish your story.

3. Take your laptop to the nearest coffee shop or bookstore cafe, or just take along pen and paper as it will work just as well. Grab a beverage and sit down to listen to other conversations around you. Pick out several of those people and, based on what they are talking about, create a story with details about these characters. Pay attention to the mannerisms of your chosen people an incorporate this into your work of fiction.

These exercises are fun ways to get your imagination going and ready to start work on your novel. You never know, you may be able to use some of these stories you write. You’ll be amazed at how good some of them turn out to be.
