Exercise Your Writing to Improve Your Book – 2 More Exercises to Reduce Writing Fat

Having a little fat in our food is good. Our bodies need fat. But too much fat is bad for us. Unfortunately most of the taste is in the fat. So we all tend to overeat where fat is concerned. That’s where diets and exercise come in.

Writing is the same. A little fat is good. A lot is a problem. Writing exercises help to keep your fat output under control.

Unfortunately, when writing to a limit many writers have a tendency to write short and then back fill. That’s one reason why they have fat in their writing. To help fill in the holes and make deadlines. It’s good as a trick. But bad as a habit. And unfortunately, if you’re doing a lot of this type of writing you don’t have a great deal of time to spend improving your own writing.

Here are two exercises which will help you to offset that trick and prevent it becoming a habit.

Like any other exercise regimen it works best if you set a particular schedule and repeat it regularly. It also helps if you rotate your writing exercises.

1. Write a dozen different sentences, ten words long.

Start out by picking a number from 5 to 10. Then pick a theme. Now write a dozen different sentences each that number of words long. Each sentence should be the same length (of course) but should be structured differently and be substantially different. Each should however, be a proper sentence. Do not use adjectives and do not use adverbs.

2. Write a dozen different paragraphs each fifty words long.

Fifty words is a fairly short paragraph. The paragraph above is about about sixty words. Your task is to write a dozen of them. One or two words difference is okay but try to make them all exactly fifty words in length. Your sentences should all be fairly lean rather than full of adjectives and adverbs. In fact, try to limit the adjectives to no more than one every two sentences. Also write your sentences in varying lengths just as you would if you were trying to write a billable piece. Every time you try this exercise change the length of the paragraph. For example one time you might want 25 word paragraphs. Then next you might use 100 word paragraphs. Don’t make them too long though. Even at fifty words you’ll find a dozen paragraphs will take at least an hour of writing time.
